And the fact that the spikes get replaced almost immediately tells me that there's probably already a fully-grown spike underneath each one that's ready to pop up when the one above it is thrown. Being whipped at things so easily indicates these spines are very loosely attached to the skin to begin with, but the muscles in the skin actually take a tighter hold on the spikes when the spikes are laid down. They can detach from the body very easily and are replaced after being thrown. The spikes on the body that can be fired are probably a bit like porcupine quills. Instead, these spikes are probably made a keritan, like scales or nails or rhinoceros horn. This means that these spikes can't be bone because they're not fused to the rest of the skeleton. (In fact, I'm surprised no one has ever argued that this should be duel-classified as a Sharp Class dragon.) Just like Nadder spikes, Whispering Death spikes can flare up and even be shot from their bodies. The Whispering Death's spikes are nearly identical to the Deadly Nadder's in how they function. So.this is basically the same theory I have for the Deadly Nadder's spikes, and that's with good reason. The spikes have other spikes already grown underneath them. Theory 1: Whispering Death horns and spines are modified scales that are much like rhino horn, and the spikes, which are also modified scales, are loosely attached to the skin, though muscles keep them in place when they are folded down.
